The radio repeaters feature was designed specifically for wildland firefighters who may be responding as mutual aid or out-of-county to wildfires. The goal is to make it easier to locate the appropriate radio repeaters in unfamiliar areas, so firefighters no longer have to rely on searching through binders for not-to-scale maps. Instead, the map in the app shows the channel and tone information that corresponds to the state radio load already programmed into their radios, ensuring that they can quickly determine which repeater to utilize. This layer can be enabled from the Layers menu under Professional.
Currently, this feature only covers California, as this is the only state where we have full access to the necessary data. However, we are eager to expand this functionality to other states. If you have information about radio repeaters in your area, we would love to work with you to add those to our platform.
Regarding the omission of frequencies, this is a deliberate decision to prevent the potential misuse of the information, such as attempts to jam the repeaters. The channel and tone details are intended to be used in conjunction with the radio load already present in responders’ radios.
We understand that some users expected to be able to listen to the frequencies these repeaters operate on. While this is not part of the radio repeaters feature, we are developing a future feature that will provide relevant Broadcastify feed information for given areas. This is still in development.
